It is interesting that an economist Dr. Claudia Sadoff, would be chosen to be director general of the International Water Management Institute. This, I think, represents a tacit acknowledgement that it is water’s economic value rather than it’s intrinsic value that is the most compelling, perceived issue in the current climate of uncertainty. I hope and trust that Dr. Sadoff recognizes the full spectrum of values of water and is able to use the power of economics as a tool to increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the many roles of water that cannot be readily monetized.
