Our understanding of the global climate is from the perspective provided by our climate statistics. Our go-to statistics are ones that made sense back in a time when the time-scale for significant climate change was so great that, for all intents and purposes, the climate could be considered stationary. Fast forward to the 2nd decade of the twentieth century and simple climate statistics like max, min and mean provide an imperfect understanding of a rapidly changing climate. It is time to change our point of perspective and I think the Extreme Temperature Index is a step in the right direction.
