The value of well-curated times-series of data should never be under-estimated as this investigation of streamflow from 222 high-quality gauges with over 30 years of continuous record in unregulated catchments proves. Regional patterns such as a decreasing trend in annual streamflow in southeastern Australia versus a strong  increasing trend in northern Australia are evident. Temporal patterns are also revealed such as significant reduction as a step change during the mid to late 1990’s in 51 out of 75 stations in the Murray-Darling Basin.
