NOAA’s new National water model uses data from more than 8,000 USGS streamgauges to make hourly forecasts for 2.7 million locations in the contiguous United States. Water level, discharge, stream velocity, soil moisture provide flood forecasters with a powerful new tool to better protect American lives and infrastructure. As big a step forward as this is, I think this is just the thin edge of the wedge of future  ‘environmental intelligence’ enabled by new monitoring technologies, improved data management, and supercomputer processing.
