The unprecedented loss of Arctic sea ice has been well documented. A somewhat trickier problem is quantifying glacier mass balance, which is the challenge this paper solves. The surface mass balance of the glaciers of the Queen Elizabeth Islands of -30 Gt/yr for the period from 2005-2014 is alarming. To put this in perspective this is about the equivalent of a ‘new’ river flowing to the sea with an average discharge of about 1,000 m3/s. That’s a lot of water.
