If you think the pace of change in observational technology has been very  fast in recent years you are not mistaken. The days of billion dollar earth observation satellites that take decades of planning before launch is giving way to UAVs, smartphones and petabyte-scale data management. The caveat: “Nor is it clear whether this deluge of data will be usefully exploited, either because the measurements are superfluous, inconsistent, not accurate enough, or simply because we lack the capacity to process and analyse them” requires a rethink on observational science to discover new opportunities to develop new insights from novel data sources.
