One of the many reasons water monitoring is important is to avoid consequences like this. We, the water monitoring community, own a big part of this problem. Either we aren’t monitoring the right things or we aren’t communicating our data to the right people in the right way. Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are almost always a result of excessive nutrient loading. That means that not only is nutrient concentration important but also the flow carrying those concentrations. If regulatory agencies had timely and reliable nutrient load data to work with, these events could very soon be completely avoided.
