New eBook “The Value of Water Monitoring” Published by Aquatic Informatics
This free resource quantifies and qualifies the value of water monitoring in an effort to help resolve the global funding crisis.
Vancouver, Canada, April 29, 2015 – Aquatic Informatics Inc., a global leader in providing innovative software for water data management and analysis, today announced the release of a new eBook "The Value of Water Monitoring" authored by Senior Hydrologist, Stuart Hamilton.
"Threats to the security of our water future are accumulating at a much faster pace than our investment in water monitoring," warns Stuart Hamilton. "The need for timely, accurate, and reliable hydrological information to effectively manage these risks is urgent. We need more certainty in evaluating our options for an increasingly uncertain future. We can’t control the weather but we can control our response to adversity. We need for that response to be well-informed by the truth about water availability and its suitability to meet our needs for public health, food security, energy security, economic prosperity, and public safety. Shared, timely, and trusted hydrological information is required to prevent systematic over-use, misuse, and abuse of this precious common-pool resource."
Research reviewed in the eBook demonstrates that the benefits of hydrological information vastly outweigh investments in water monitoring. It will help water resource professionals, government agencies, private enterprises, and citizens around the world frame locally meaningful discussions on how to best prepare for a secure water future, and it can help form persuasive arguments sensitive to local politics and priorities in order to address the global deficit in funding.
Dedicated to improving the science and practice of water monitoring, Stuart Hamilton has over 35 years of experience in water monitoring, including 17 years of field experience in northern Canada, and nearly as many years in research and development and operational management with the Water Survey of Canada, where he oversaw 500+ stations. Stu is, or has been: Associate Expert in Hydrology with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO); Canadian Liaison with the Hydrometry Committee (TC 113) of the International Standards Organization (ISO); President of North American Stream Hydrographers (NASH); and Member of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Hydrological Domain Working Group.
