There is still much to learn and improved observation systems are being deployed but this much is becoming clear: “A continued amplified warming in the Arctic is also expected to decrease the temperature gradient between the Arctic and midlatitudes, which is anticipated to influence the meandering of the polar jet stream and wind patterns… this might increase the probability of extreme weather events in the midlatitudes, including colder winters and summer heat waves.”
