The technique used to measure the speed of glaciers from space sounds an awful lot like the Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry technique used for non-contact stream gauging that I have posted about a few times. This should give a much more reliable picture of glacier health globally. Rapid movement is usually associated with thinning and also moves more ice to lower, warmer, elevations.
