Stream hydrographers are tuned into the processes controlling channel form to better understand and predict changes in rating curve dynamics. We are all familiar with the roles of sediment transport and vegetation dynamics but may not be aware of the influence of groundwater interactions. Where there is groundwater upwelling channel stability is increased and the active channel width reduces. Where there is groundwater downwelling a wider channel width is maintained.
