This article got me thinking about the classic images of the hydrological cycle depicting water transfers between the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and lithosphere. Drawings of this dynamic usually include some indication of human activity such as reservoirs and agriculture but this conversation moves beyond that nominal place-setting. This amounts to an existential categorization of man as being a globally distinct entity and force. This may be a valid and useful argument in the Anthropocene era that has implications for what hydrology is and how it will be learned in the future.
