Satellite imagery gives us a window to observe the retreat and fragmentation of glacier systems. In this case the rate of retreat is 250 m/yr. The mechanisms of retreat are also evident from the imagery. Some of it by melt resulting from high snowlines, some of it by greater water depth in the proglacial lake. These changes will impact hydro power production and salmon runs. In a sense, recent acceleration of climate processes gives us a view of events that we would otherwise expect to occur over geologic time-scales as they unfold in near-real-time. What will this acceleration allow us to observe over our life-time? We will no doubt understand glaciers much better as a result of watching their extinction.
