The annual World Economic Forum Global Risk Report is an excellent tool for tracking trends and understanding intricacies. Water Crises, extreme weather events, failure to adapt to climate change all rank as above average for both impact and likelihood continuing a trend of increasing risk. The intricacies of how water crises trigger or exacerbate social, political and economic disruption are revealed through the economic analyses. These interactions are non-linear and can contain feedback loops where social and political challenges can amplify our environmental risks. Technology is not a panacea but increases the scope for  cascading systemic failure either from cyberattacks, software glitches, and natural disasters. The severity of these threats should be a call to action for the water monitoring community to proactively manage and mitigate these risks.
